INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR OS/2 2.1 DRIVERS FOR:
SpeedStar VGA, Super VGA, and Hi-Color
SpeedStar 24
SpeedStar 24X
SpeedStar Pro ISA and VLB
1. Boot DOS and run your mode-setting utility. For the SpeedStar VGA,
Super VGA, Hi-Color, and 24, the mode setting utility is VMODE. For
the SpeedStar 24X the mode setting utility is 24XMODE. For the
SpeedStar Pro, the mode setting utility is PROMODE. Using the mode-
setting utility, configure your monitor for use with the Diamond card.
If you have any questions about the mode-setting, please consult the
manual for your Diamond card. DO NOT RUN THE MODE SETTING UTILITY
FROM A DOS SESSION UNDER OS/2!
2. Boot OS/2. Open up an OS/2 windowed or full-screen command prompt.
From the command prompt, type DSPINSTL, the press Enter.
3. Put the IBM Display Driver Disk 1 into drive A. The first screen will
allow you to select Primary Display or Secondary Display. Click on
Primary Display, then click on OK.
4. The next screen will allow you to select the chip type for your video
card. It should automatically select the correct chip, but here are
the correct selections anyway:
SpeedStar VGA, Super VGA, Hi-Color, and SpeedStar 24: ET4000
SpeedStar 24X: Western Digital WD90C30
SpeedStar Pro: Cirrus Logic
Click on the correct chip type, then click on OK.
5. The next screen will give you two options, Install Using Defaults For
Monitor and Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program. If you
have a SpeedStar Pro ISA, click on Install Using Defaults For Monitor,
then click on OK and go to step 7. If you have any other card, click
on Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program, then click on OK.
6. A standard OS/2 file open window will appear. The file you are looking
for is the mode-setting utility. Normally, these are found in the
following locations:
SpeedStar VGA, Super VGA, Hi-color: C:\STAR\UTIL\VMODE.COM
SpeedStar 24: C:\SS24\UTIL\VMODE.COM
SpeedStar 24X: C:\24XMODE.COM
SpeedStar Pro VLB: C:\SSPRO\UTIL\PROMODE.COM
Once you have the file located, click on OK. This will return you to
the screen with the locate button. It should now show you the full
path to the mode-setting utility, as listed above. Click at the end
of the line, then put a space, followed by the word MONITOR, so that
it looks like the following:
SpeedStar VGA, Super VGA, Hi-color: C:\STAR\UTIL\VMODE.COM MONITOR
SpeedStar 24: C:\SS24\UTIL\VMODE.COM MONITOR
SpeedStar 24X: C:\24XMODE.COM MONITOR
SpeedStar Pro VLB: C:\SSPRO\UTIL\PROMODE.COM MONITOR
7. The screen will flash several times as it cycles through some mode
changes. A screen will then come up with a choice of resolutions.
Pick one of the resolutions that your card supports, then click OK.
8. You should now have a box prompting you for a drive. The disk is
already in the drive, so click Install. The necessary files will be
copied over and the necessary configuration files modified. It will
prompt you for the second disk. When it does, put the Display Driver
Disk 2 into your A drive, then click OK.
9. Once the drivers have been copied over, exit from the OS/2 windowed
or full screen command prompt, then shut down OS/2 and reboot. Your
system should now come up in the resolution you chose in step 7.
